From Jan 2014 issue of Arizona Republic:
The total number of DUIs in Arizona dropped last year for the first time in the past decade, according to new data from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, which coordinates a statewide task force targeting drunk drivers .
Officers participating in the task force made more than 29,000 DUI arrests in 2013, a decrease of more than 3,000 from 2012’s total, according to the Office of Highway Safety. Authorities made nearly 4,000 DUI arrests during the 2013 holiday season, which began on Nov. 25 and went to the end of the year.
Most of the offenses the task force tracked in 2013 saw a decrease in comparison to 2012 with the exception of child-restraint citations, which rose to 4,288 from 3,671.
The task force’s total traffic stops also fell in 2013, from more than 875,000 in 2012 to about 765,000 last year, due in part to about 5,000 fewer officers and deputies participating in the task force , according to the Office of Highway Safety.
Despite the reduction in officers and deputies participating in the task force, Alberto Gutier, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, attributed fewer drivers being pulled over to the public’s better understanding of knowing legal limits and their realization of the consequences for driving under the influence.
